HACOF was contracted by RTI to conduct an in-depth assessment on the benefits of camel leasing for pastoral communities and explore ways to improve the practice. This assessment aimed to evaluate both the intended and unintended consequences of camel leasing, providing a comprehensive understanding of its economic, social, and environmental impacts. By examining the effectiveness of this practice, the study sought to identify opportunities for enhancing its sustainability and maximizing benefits for pastoralists.
The assessment focused on key areas such as the economic viability of camel leasing, its role in supporting livelihoods, and its impact on traditional pastoralist practices. Additionally, the study analyzed potential risks and challenges associated with camel leasing, including market dynamics, contractual agreements, and long-term sustainability. By gathering insights from pastoral communities, stakeholders, and experts, the findings of this assessment provided actionable recommendations to improve camel leasing systems. The outcomes of this study contributed to informing policy decisions, strengthening support mechanisms for pastoralists, and enhancing economic resilience within communities that rely on livestock for their livelihoods.
